Jews are known as the people of the book, and Jewish leaders and authorities were almost always known by the name of the sefer they wrote, which was their contribution to the Oral Law.
Additionally, Jewish history is divided into tekufos – eras, and assesses the scholars of each preceding era with greater esteem. Knowing when someone lived helps one rank that author in his rightful era.
This reference work was created to help navigate the Who’s and What’s of Jewish bibliography, and list all of the standard available sefarim, including those written by the Chassidic Admorim.
